Schools teach children to read and Libraries promote reading by offering free literature.  These two institutions will unite once again to launch 2018’s”Battle of the Books”, a game show style reading competition between 5th grade students.

Any 5th grade student can form a BOB team.  Teams are limited to a maximum of 5 students, one of which must be a resident of the city in which they are competing.  After the students form teams, they must read from a list of ten preselected books of different genres, and compete by answering questions regarding those books.  BOB battles will take place during the month of February 2018.

The titles selected for BOB 2018 were released to students in May and here they are:

GRAPHIC NOVEL

MYSTERY

NONFICTION

FANTASY

DIFFERING ABILITIES

VIRGINIA READER’S CHOICE

SCHOOL’S PICK

SCIFI

HISTORICAL FICTION

MULTICULTURAL

Preliminary BOB battles will take place at the student’s school or at a public library.  Each school’s winning team will then compete for the Chesapeake Public Library’s BOB finale at the Central Library.  Winners from the finale will move on to the regional battle – location TBD.

Chesapeake Public Library staff will provide tools needed to facilitate BOB at your school.  Staff are willing to meet and discuss any questions or concerns you may have.  Good luck and let the games begin!
