Tidewater Reads brings people together through the reading and discussion of a common book. Shine Shine Shine by Lydia Netzer is the 2016 selection. 9 systems have joined this initiative and are providing mini-events highlighting the themes of this quirky novel infused with space travel, romance, and secrets. Although the novel has received mixed reviews, I really enjoyed reading about the characters and how they deal with the different aspects of their lives. Flashbacks help to reveal the secrets. One character, Sunny, loses something and one of her secrets is revealed to her friends. As the story progresses, one secret after another is revealed.
This revealing of secrets led to creating the Wig Out! contest where individuals could design a wig that reveals the true self of the creator. Six entries were received. Voting is currently going on at the Central Library throughout the month of September.
On September 9, the author will be at the Central Library. Following the author talk and question & answer period, we will have an open mic for attendees to participate. If you have a poem or song to share, sign up to share at the door. Doors will open at 6:30 pm. Speaker will share at 7:00 pm. Ms. Netzer may bring her guitar and share some songs related to the story. Themes of the book include robots, space travel, relationships, disability, diversity and death.
Starting September 8, every Thursday a movie recommended by one of the four main characters will be shown from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. After the movie, take a trip to stars at the planetarium. Show starts at 8:00 pm. Reservations are required to attend the show. Call 757.547.0153 to register.
