It’s been a while since our list of services for job seekers has been updated in the blog, so I thought it was time to take care of that matter.
Computers: Use our computers for filling out online job applications, writing resumes and cover letters, checking your email, looking for jobs and printing out your resume. Most locations also have laptop computers that can be checked out for use inside the library; these laptops allow you to have a 4 hour computer session, which is very helpful when doing lengthy online applications.
Copier/Scanner: Is your resume on paper but the online application wants you to upload it? We’ve got that covered! Use one of our copier/scanners to scan your paper resume and save it as a PDF document on a USB drive, which you can then use to upload the document. Don’t know how to do that? A friendly staff member will be happy to assist you. There is no charge for scanning documents.
Free FAX service: Some companies want you to submit documents to them via FAX. Whether it’s local or long distance, it’s free to send faxes at your Chesapeake library.
Free Notary service: Employers often ask new hires to provide a notarized signed release for a background check. We have notary publics on staff at every Chesapeake library location. It’s a good idea to call ahead to make sure one will be available when you come to the library.
Free Job Help from trained staff: Need help with creating your resume, writing a cover letter, setting up a free email account or filling out those online applications? We’re here to assist! Come to a drop-in Job Help session, check The Loop, CPL’s catalog of events and classes, available online and in print, for times and locations or schedule a one on one appointment.
Free Job Help Classes: We regularly offer classes for job seekers presented by organizations including Opportunity Inc., The Virginia Department of Labor, Tidewater Builders Association and Goodwill Industries. Ask at your library, check our website or look in The Loop for dates and times.
Free Computer Classes: Are you a little rusty in your computer skills? We offer basic classes in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and more. Check our website www.infopeake.org, or look in our latest copy of The Loop to find the right class for you.
More Free Classes: The library has recently added Universal Class to our premium websites. There you can find free classes on everything from accounting to yoga, but of special interest to jobseekers are the classes Resume 101 and Interview Skills 101. Another great website accessible through our library is BenchPrep, which offers test preparation and practice tests for college entrance exams and certification exams in many career areas. To use these websites all you need is your Chesapeake Public Library card. Find Universal Class here and Benchprep here. Links to those sites are also found at our website, www.infopeake.org, by hovering over the Research menu on the homepage.
Free Test Proctoring Services: Do you need to take an online test for your job or online college course? We offer free exam proctoring services! Please contact your library in advance to make arrangements for your test day.
Books, Movies, Music and more: Whether you’re looking for a book about resume writing or something to entertain you while you’re taking a break from your job hunt, you can find it at your Chesapeake Public Library. We have everything from books to video games, all free to borrow with your library card.
You may have noticed that I have used the word free a lot in this blog. All of these services are available to you free of charge! Some require a Chesapeake Library card, but the card itself is free to all Virginia residents. Don’t have a Chesapeake library card yet? You can fill out the application online here, then bring your photo ID and proof of residence (if your photo ID doesn’t have your current address on it) to one of our library locations to receive your new card.
