The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead is about Rose Hathaway (a young *Dhampir girl) who is training to be a bodyguard for her friend Vasilisa Dragomir (who is a *Moroi). The school they attend is St. Vladimirs Academy. While training to defeat the evil *Strigoi, Rose falls in love with her teacher, Dimitri Belikov.
*The words in bold script refer to differenct types of vampires. This has series has recently been made into a movie. [See the poster below]
The House of Night series by P.C. Cast (and her daughter Kristin Cast) is about Zoey Redbird, who has to leave her family and move into the House of Night boarding school once she gets “Marked” by a vampyre tracker and begins to undergo the “Change” into an actual vampyre.
This series is being made into a movie which will be released in 2015.
Richelle Mead has already published 3 other book series as well as some children’s stories. P.C. Cast published 2 other book series before teaming up with her daughter to produce House of Night, which is Kristin Cast’s only endeavor. Though both book series are successful and both have lead to movie deals, I’d have to say it’s probably due to the subject matter – not necessarily because of the writing skills.
I found the Vampire Academy books to be rather dark for several reasons 1) Rose has a “psychic bond” to Lissa that is almost sexual, 2) Lissa engages in self-mutilation, and 3) Rose has an inappropriate relationship with her much older teacher and 4) there is torture involved when killing enemies that they appear to enjoy.
By contrast, the House of Night series is more uplifting in that it takes on an almost divine quality in showing how good and evil are pitted against each other. The vampires here drink blood, but they do not kill humans. They form a bond called “imprinting” with those humans who freely choose to participate. These vampires adhere to the teachings of their Goddess Nynx and are influenced by the Earthly spirits of wind, water and fire. There is true friendship and the desire to do what is right.
Therefore, I chose HOUSE OF NIGHT as the winner in this Book Battle.
