Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman has to be one of the quirkiest stories that I have ever read. I am tagging it as a rulebreaker because it is technically a juvenile book and not a teen book. What I loved about it is that it was short and funny. The whole family listened to it in the car and it only took an hour. When it was over, we all just kind of said “Huh? That was weird.”
The story is about a family and dad is left in charge of the kids when mom goes out of town for a couple of days. Dad forgets to buy milk and has to go out to purchase it. When it takes him awhile to come back with the milk he tells his children about a wonderful adventure that he was on while fortunately, the milk never gets lost. It includes dinosaurs, hot air balloons, talking volcanoes, wumpires, pirates and aliens.
If you are looking for something a bit off the wall (and relatively short) to read, I would give this book a whirl.
