The technologically-advanced Illyri  invaded planet Earth a generation ago and set themselves up as rulers.  There are still pockets of rebellion among the Earthlings, despite the bloodly battles that have been fought.

Syl Hellais is the first of the Illyri to be born here. As the daughter of Lord Andrus, she is hated by humans and ensnared by the politics surrounding her Father’s office. When she is rescued by Paul Kerr, a rebel boy, she begins to see the subjugation of humanity in a different light and feels affection for the only home she has ever known.  This is book one of a new series.  There are several sub-plots that hint about the direction that book two may be headed, but I can’t reveal them here.  Let’s just say that everything is about to become very complicated because the good guys aren’t all good and the bad guys aren’t all bad.

The 5th Wave is the first book in another alien invasion trilogy.  This time the story follows Cassie Sullivan, a human girl who has survived the infestation of  spiritual parasites who take over human bodies.  You can never be sure who is human and who is alien. When Cassie reluctantly teams up with a strange boy to save her little brother she discovers that there is something more sinister going on than she ever imagined.  This book is already in production as a movie starring Chloë Grace Moretz (She was Isabelle in the movie Hugo.)  It’s rumored to do for aliens what “Twilight” did for vampires.  Can’t wait to see.

I can’t decide which of the two book I liked best.  Both were very well written with likeable characters and believable (though somewhat tangled) plots.

Born to read, forced to work.
