SCI-FI ADVISORY (and RULE BREAKER)
Yeah, this is a rule breaker because it’s an adult book! There is no sex or violence, but there is some profanity. Nothing you haven’t heard though and this is an awesome book! You’ve got to read it!
The premise: A group of astronauts land on Mars. There is an accident and one of them gets left behind. Everyone assumes he is dead. The book is about his struggle to survive. (Kind of like Tom Hanks in “Cast Away”- only a planet, not an island.)
We learn the story by reading what was recorded in astronaut, Mark Watney’s log. This was excellent! The narrative is believable and reads almost as if it were non-fiction throughout the book. Author Andy Weir obviously knows his subject and can explain technical ideas in ways that are easy to understand – and does so without distracting us from the story.
I have to say that if I were ever stranded anywhere, I would want the character he created by my side. This man is amazing! He has a wicked sense of humor and tackles the impossible by simply using his mind to come up with crazy solutions. Some work and some don’t – just like real life.
I won’t spoil the ending for you, because you need to read this book for yourself. Go on, get it now!
