Teen Book Battle: Salvage vs. Avalon

The future is here!!

Or at least another year begins today!! There is a lot to look forward to, including these two books…

Avalon by Mindee Arnett

Teens in space!

Jeth and his merry band of teenage thieves have made a science of stealing. They know how to get away with any heist, and no one ever sees them coming. The thrill and challenge of taking control of someone else’s property is part of the draw, but behind the fun of a little risky behavior is a darkly evil crimelord.

This book has been compared to sci-fi cult classic Firefly. The crew is quirky, and they get into some right good scrapes. They might be living outside the law, but golly they are likeable. Fans of the show will be quick to point out that nothing compares to Firefly but this is a good book in its own right and the next book in the series could put this in the realm of awesome.

Ava and her family live on a space ship, traveling merchant routes without ever touching down on a planet. Ava may not have to deal with gravity, but she does have to cope with the strict rules onboard her father’s ship- they are oppressive. Of course, she knows how life works on her ships, when circumstance come together to send her out of orbit Ava has to learn to cope with gravity and even bigger problems.

I like both of these books. There’s something slightly more magnetic about Avalon so it wins with a narrow lead.
