SIX WORD SUMMARY SHOWDOWN

COURAGE AND INGENUITY

AGAINST MENACING EVIL!

Published by DC Comics in the 1950’s,  author Dave Wood created this story of four men who survived a plane crash together -pilot Ace Morgan, scientist Professor Haley, daredevil Red Ryan, and boxing champ Rocky Davis – who decide to work together to explore the mysteries of the world and protect mankind. They encounter aliens from outer space, evil robots and monstrous creatures.  This was an idea that was recycled later for Marvel Comic’s “The Fantastic Four” and in the animated film “The Justice League Unlimited” .

What you might not know is that in 1953 a senate subcommittee was established to investigate the problem of juvenile delinquency which focused on the graphic  “crime and horror” comic books of the day – such as this one.  Because of the unfavorable publicity, the comic book industry itself adopted the Comics Code Authority, a self-regulatory ratings code that was initially adopted by nearly all comic publishers  – and was still used by some comics until 2011. Weird, huh?
