Ruby Red vs. A Mad, Wicked Folly

………………………………………………………

Ruby Red is the story of Gwyneth. Her family has set all of their hopes on her perfect cousin Charlotte. Charlotte is beautiful, smart, talented and destined to be a time traveller. When the time comes, however it is Gwyneth that ends up spiraling through time. Suddenly Gwen loses control of her life as a secret society plots to use her to achieve their own mysterious ends.

A Mad, Wicked Folly is the story of Victoria. Victoria’s family has massive expectations for her future and they don’t involve pursuing her dreams. Vicky nearly ruins everything when she steps in to model nude for the sake of art. Suddenly Vicky is ripped away from her French finishing school and her bohemian friends when her parents take control of her life and plot to use her marriage to advance the family business.

These two books have a lot in common. Both stories have major shout outs to history but very different approaches: Ruby Red has a Doctor Who vibe while A Mad, Wicked Folly is more Downton Abbey. Both books have breathtakingly beautiful covers. Both books have girls forced to fight against the opposition to unlock hidden destinies. I even read both books for free: Ruby Red was available at my local library and A Mad, Wicked Folly was made available thanks to the publisher’s e-proof. (A Mad, Wicked Folly will be published 1.23.2014.)

Obviously if you prefer time-travel elements and the whole sci-fi scene Ruby Red is up your alley but if for a brief moment you want to become absorbed in another time yourself; to live the culture and social change of the early 20th century A Mad, Wicked Folly is the way to go. Go experience the fight for women’s rights and the painful pressure to conform; take the time to look up all the amazing art mentioned in the book and fall in love with the Edwardian period. You’ll thank me later.
