city of emberLina and Doon are 12 years old and as is the custom in their town; it is time for them to graduate from school and become part of the working world of Ember.  However, the city of Ember is falling apart.  The power outages, food, and supply shortages are plaguing the city.  Inhabitants of Ember are growing increasingly afraid and don’t know where to turn for answers.

I know what you are thinking: Why don’ t they just leave?

The city of Ember is unlike any city we would know of, it is surrounded by darkness with great flood lights attached to the buildings and poles to keep the darkness at bay.  In this city there are NO movable lights like flashlights or candles to allow people to walk into the darkness and find a way out.  Lina and Doon may have found the answer in the form of a fragmented ancient parchment.  Can they piece together the message, and save their city and its’ inhabitants before the lights go out for good?

Overall, the movie was OK.  The storyline moved along but it was choppy and jumped from scene to scene, in my opinion.  I could not gauge how much time had passed from each incident.

For those who have read the book and want to see the movie: there are additional incidents added to the movie that were not a part of the book’s story line, so don’t start shouting ,THAT WASN’T IN THE BOOK!  You have been warned.

This is the first book in the City of Ember series and it sets up the story excellently.  While reading this, you may feel so much a part of the story that you will feel the urge to tell the characters about candles and other ways to light the darkness around Ember.
